Holiday Reading

Posted on November 25, 2022

As we start the summer holidays, this time of year can be filled with lots of busy moments and hopefully some time to sit back, relax and enjoy a good book.

Here are some tips for encouraging your child to get reading these holidays. You might even find something that encourages you to pick up a book yourself.

Keep it fun

Reading is fun. Reading for pleasure is one of the most powerful things we can do to improve mental, cognitive and emotional development and wellbeing, but it is also important to keep reading enjoyable. It can be hard if your child has had a poor reading experience or has not yet found the right format for them. Remember, all reading counts. Reading a graphic novel, a magazine, an information book, a novel, an ebook or listening to an audiobook all have enormous benefit. It all counts as great reading, so find a format that best suits your child or introduce them to a new format this holidays.

Discover an audiobook

If you are heading on a road trip or plane trip, you might like an audiobook to carry you through that journey. All students and staff can access the ePlatform with their usual school email and password login details on a laptop or via the ePlatform app for Apple, Google and Android devices. You can share this with the whole family and get everyone listening. There are some incredible audiobooks to enjoy. Did you know there are even graphic novels that have been turned into full-cast audiobook performances?

Get crafting

Students in the Junior School have access to Story Box Library. This fantastic platform offers books that are read by actors, authors and celebrities and pairs each book with a fun activity. It can help your younger readers connect creativity with reading and keep them busy over the holiday break. Check your emails from earlier in the year for login details.

Check out your local library

Staff and Secondary School students are welcome to borrow from the Library for the summer holidays but if you missed the chance to borrow, why not make a visit to your local public library. All public libraries offer a fantastic range of hardcopy and digital books, movies, music and more. Most branches have activities running over the summer holidays. The Brisbane City Council Library runs the Summer Reading Project, which encourages and rewards reading over the summer and they host a fantastic range of events and activities. The Moreton Bay Libraries also host an incredible range of events for the holidays.
