Portrait inspired masks
Our Year 5 students recently completed a unit on portraiture in Visual Culture. These students were asked to research and design a half-mask to transform themselves into a character from either ancient or modern history.
In their lessons students drew in the details of the upper face including detailed eyes, hair and headwear. Acrylics and water-soluble crayons were used to complete the masks with realistic colour and texture. For homework, students compiled a costume with accessories that would help them complete their character transformations. Finally students were photographed in a photography studio set up in the Visual Culture room.
The finished transformations were quite remarkable thanks in no small part to the parents who did a fantastic job in helping their child/ren organise their costumes and props at home.
